Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), was established on March 2, 1959. The present ITB main campus is the site of earlier engineering schools in Indonesia. Although each institution of higher education that started the ITB has the characteristics and missions each, all provide some influence on the developments leading to the establishment of ITB.

ITB history began with the early history of the twentieth century, on the initiative of public authorities at the time. Pendirianya initial idea mainly intended to meet the manpower needs techniques that have become difficult due to disruption of the relationship between the Netherlands and its colonies in the area of the Archipelago region, as a result of the outbreak of the First World War. De Techniche Hoogeschool te Bandung stood dated July 3, 1920 with a faculty de Faculteit van Technische Wetenschap which has only one major de afdeeling der Weg en Waterbouw.

Driven by ideas and beliefs which are based on the spirit of independence struggle as well as insights into the future, the Government of Indonesia inaugurated the establishment of Institut Teknologi Bandung on March 2, 1959. In contrast to the dignity of the establishment of five technical colleges earlier in the same campus, Bandung Institute of Technology was born in an atmosphere of devotion to the mission of the dynamics of science and technology, which is based in real life on the earth itself to the life and development of an advanced nation and dignity.

Period of the first decade of the 1960s began to build and equip ITB itself with institution of which must be held. In this period made the charging-charging preparatory education and teaching organization, and completed the number and improve the ability of teachers to learn to overseas assignments.

Period of the second decade of the 1970s ITB colored by the hard times that may arise before the first period. Academic unit has been set up turned into a working unit that also functions as a socio-economic units that are limited to semi-autonomous institutions. Keakademian level increased, but the assignment of studying abroad to have petered out. Facility and the institution of increasingly utilized internally.

Period of the third decade of the 1980s marked by the institution of teaching and learning process that started the modern era with a growing campus physical facilities equipped. The number of graduates is increasing and the graduate program was opened. This situation is supported by the improvement of the socio-political and economic state.

Period of the fourth decade of the 1990s technical college which originally had only one education department, now has twenty-six Ministry Degree Program, including the Department Sosioteknologi, thirty-four S2/Magister Studies Program and the three fields that include elements of S3/Doktor Studies elements of science, technology, art, business and humanitarian sciences.

This decade will deliver the files into the dawn of the new century marked by the emergence of various ideas and best thinking for development. Some of them include:

That the rapid doubling of information in the new century will demand the implementation of education berpercepatan, timely, integrated, sustainable, and is the best investment efforts. In an attempt to enforce this ITB Degree Program in the mastery of science foundation with a solid foundation so that graduates are always able to adjust to the changes that come quickly. Graduate Program spearheading the improvement of the quality and quantity, efficiency and effectiveness, and relevance to the needs, thus contributing to national development ITB will become larger and higher value.

That the mastery and development of science and technology should be comprehensive and integrated, in a gait as a Research and Development University. Development of science and technology in the ITB is based on the need to support the implementation of nation-building. Thus ITB will develop itself in research and manufacturing, communications and information technology, land-sea transportation and aerospace, environmental, and bio-technology and Bioscience.

Devotion to the public that the mission is expected to build business insight to independence which is the initial capital to enforce the autonomy of universities. Business insight for independence is directed to accomplish the implementation of obligations and tasks of education and research as high.

ITB expected that development rests on the strength of institutions such as the use of information as well as possible, maintaining competent Lecturer high quality skills and dedication, an integrated education system, and cooperation that is entwined with government, industry and research and educational institutions in and outside country. So that the planned development can be monitored on an ongoing basis and measured by the implementation Tridharma universities, human resource development, physical infrastructure, institution of norms and procedures of work, as well as economic, social, cultural and security.

That the desire to develop the ITB was revealed with the spirit and attitude that recognizes the existence of ITB scientific truth, scientific truth can be approached through observation accompanied by a rational analysis. That the chase and search for scientific truth is the right of every human being on earth, and science and technology in order to use the maximum for the welfare of mankind, and the people of Indonesia in particular.

Period of five decades of the 2000s the Bandung Institute of Technology, its legal status as government agencies in the form of domestic service at the date of December 26, 2000, the Government through the Government Regulation No. 155 2000 Bandung Institute of Technology has set as a State Owned Corporation.

State University with a status of legal entity is something without precedent in the history of Higher Education in Indonesia. It begins with the publication of
No PP. 61 year 1999 concerning the Establishment of University Affairs as Legal Materials which followed diterbitnya PP No. Decision 155 of 2000 on Bandung Institute of Technology became the State Owned Legal Materials. And with the publication of the PP 155, since the date of December 26, 2000 which then became the official ITB Legal Entity as appropriate other legal entity that justified carrying out all legal actions that do not violate laws and regulations applicable legislation. The first consideration is observed in PP No. 61 in brief is that there is globalization, which generate fierce competition. So to improve national competitiveness needed PT who can build a democratic civil society and compete globally. For the PT, including ITB, must obtain independence, autonomy and greater responsibility. Emphasis is on the process of globalization.
